Hello! I’m Jessica Stephens and I’m running for the Sweet Home school district Board of Education. Thank you for stopping by and let me tell you about myself. I live with my husband, our two children, and our rescue dog in Amherst.
Our two children are currently enrolled in the Sweet Home school district. My youngest daughter is currently a second-grader at Willow Ridge Elementary, and my oldest daughter is currently in fifth grade at Willow Ridge - soon to be in Middle School! I have been on the Willow Ridge PTO board for six years, including 3 years as Treasurer, 1 year as Membership, and 2 years as co-President. I brought both Science Night and Multicultural Night to Willow Ridge, and I help every year to make the Willow Ridge PTO Basket Raffle & Silent Auction a success. I ran the Scholastic Book Fair for four years. As PTO Treasurer, I transferred all of our financial records into a shareable Google Sheet and started a shared PTO Google Drive, with the goal of making all of our financial records transparent and easily accessible. I was able to secure an author visit one year while on the PTO, and I was the driving force behind getting the Weather Machine to visit Willow Ridge. I have met some amazing people, great leaders, and lifelong friends on the PTO.
During the 2020-2021 School Year, we chose to keep our children home for remote learning through the Sweet Home Remote Academy. During that time, I was honored to serve as the parent representative on the Remote Academy Building Leadership Team (BLT). Also during that time, I along with three close friends was awarded the Sweet Home PTA/PTO Council Leon C. (Sid) Oberacker Award, presented annually for “Outstanding Voluntary Service to School and Community.” This was awarded due to our work in securing COVID vaccine appointments for neighbors, Sweet Home teachers/staff, and the entire Western NY community. I was also nominated and was a finalist for the WNY InfoTech Good Neighbor Award.
My educational background is in Environmental Science and Chemistry. I currently own my own business, selling homemade goods as an LLC. My husband is a software developer and is extremely supportive of my decision to run for Board of Education.
My name is Amy Battaglia and I am running for reelection to the Sweet Home School Board. The Sweet Home Community has been my home for over 20 years. My husband, my stepson, and my oldest daughter are Sweet Home Alumni. My youngest daughter is a ninth-grade student in our high school. I currently work full time at Daemen College in the education department, preparing teachers to fulfill their dreams of teaching and being a bridge to our district, which has proven to be invaluable while serving the Sweet Home Community. I have served the Sweet Home district in multiple ways over the last 20 years, most recently as a board member. I started as a member of the Heritage Heights PTA, eventually becoming president. I was an employee of the district for several years as well. Serving on several committees was what ultimately led me to run for the board of education 3 years ago. During the pandemic, everyone faced many challenges. This was especially true as I worked tirelessly with the administration, fellow board members, and the community on so many aspects of keeping our kids as safe as possible while still receiving their education. While we are beginning to get back to something that resembles normal, we are not there yet. It is important to help all of our community members to heal and continue Sweet Home’s excellent reputation. Our students deserve the best education and experiences that we can provide.
My personal goals, in addition to keeping our kids safe at school, would include helping encourage the return of the rigorous learning that our kids were accustomed to prior to the pandemic and continuing to encourage transparent communication at all levels with all community members. It is very important to me that all community members have their voices heard but even more important that our students have every fulfilling experience that we can offer them. I would like to bring back more of the social experiences for the entire community. I pledge to continue to gather information by asking informative questions and maintaining a focus on whole-child education. I believe I can make a difference by working hard as a strong advocate for our children and collaborating as a team member on the Sweet Home Board of Education. I am committed to our community’s health, safety and education as we continue to build Sweet Home’s excellent reputation together
