From Our SHEA President....

It is with great enthusiasm that I write this note for the
SHEA Voice! Since taking office July 1, I have been
introduced to so many other aspects of our Association than what I was a part of as your Vice President for the past fifteen years.

I owe a great gratitude to Mr. Mark Shanahan, who quietly took care of so much for so many, over many years; all the while helping me grow and prepare to take on this endeavor as SHEA President. I am looking forward to working with SHEA officers MaryBeth Bruce, Maggi McDonald and David Gerspach. Early in July, one of the first things I did was appoint Jennifer Bennett as our new Grievance Chair. Jen has a wealth of experience at the elementary level and has been a long-time member of PRC where she has helped negotiate contracts for the past 15 years.

I know that our Association is filled with so many thoughtful, creative, and dedicated people that are ready to support the challenges we face. Through the end of last school year and over the summer, we have been working very hard to comply with new parameters that surround the “Janus” Supreme Court ruling.  Though the ruling did not fall in our favor, I do believe that it will actually strengthen union membership throughout the country, state and of course locally. Over the summer, Maggi McDonald and MaryBeth Bruce met with our
newest SHEA Members to present to them the significance of being a union member. By the end of their session, 100% of the new hires voluntarily signed up with our union. The same is true of our 2017-2018 members; 100% of our Association completed membership cards before July 1st committing to our professional union. Wow! This could not have been done without the hard work of our leaders at each building. Many thanks go out to our senior building reps from last year: John Olear, Maggi McDonald, Cindy Hiwiller, Jim Brennan, Julie Ceccato, Jim Frijey, and Josh Hicks. I know there were many other members hat helped at each building. Your efforts were amazing!

Members like you realize that we are stronger when we work together. We understand that being a union member is not just being engaged with issues that are in our buildings, but being aware of bigger topics that impact our profession, communities, and society in general. Unionism is something to be proud of.  Knowing that our voice and values can help shape the world around us is powerful. The upcoming election season will be an opportunity to let those in Washington and Albany know that if they don’t support public education, we don’t support them! There are over 600,000 NYSUT members throughout New York State. We are a powerful entity when we get out and vote. I hope that you will be able to vote on November 6th.

The school year ahead is faced with growing concerns around student mental health, high stakes testing, teacher evaluations and a contract that expires June 30, 2019. You can be sure that I will do everything possible to prepare our eadership team to be ready for these challenges and that I will communicate to you accordingly. As always, thank you in advance for your confidence and support. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions or concerns you may have. I hope you have a wonderful school year.

In solidarity,

Paul Szymendera

SHEA MEMBERS WANT TO KNOW....

FMLA - Family Medical Leave Act

Several SHEA members have recently inquired about the Family Medical Leave Act. SHEA President, Paul Szymendera wanted to share this information. If you have any questions about FMLA, please direct them to Paul, Mary Beth Bruce, or Jennifer Bennett.

Established in 1993, this labor law was created to provide employees with job-protected and unpaid leave for qualified medical and family reasons.

Essentially, the act allows eligible employees to take up to 12 work weeks of unpaid leave during any 12- month period to attend to the serious health condition of the employee, parent, spouse or child, or for pregnancy or care of a newborn child, or for adoption or foster care of a child.

Our Association has maintained that the member, not the employer, initiates FMLA use. The District may ask an employee to complete FMLA paperwork who is preparing to go out on an approved leave. However, FMLA may never be triggered to begin because the employee has paid sick leave days to use prior to needing FMLA coverage.

Typically, a SHEA member might use FMLA to care or their newborn as part of a child-rearing leave or when they have run out of sick days as they attend to a serious health condition. In either case, the employee will still receive health care coverage based on our negotiated agreement and their job is held for them until the leave is over.

Welcome to the Family~
