President's Message:
Teacher shortage? Is this a national item, regional, or both?? NYSUT is doing its part to encourage the next generation of professionals to learn more and become connected with the significance of unionism.
I am hoping that you may read and share these links with family members and friends who you know have an interest in becoming a teacher. NYSUT has a student membership initiative that opens membership to our newest professionals, even if they are still in college!
As the father of a future student teacher candidate at SUNY Cortland, I am proud to pass this information and benefits along to her and all her classmates! Even if you don't have someone in mind, this is a great way to work with your “pipeline” students that may be placed in the building you work. Encourage them to get involved early. Let them know there are many things beyond local contracts that one can benefit from via NYSUT.
Benefits Include:
-
Union Advocacy
-
Certification Assistance
-
Discounted and Free Services
-
Professional Development
An individual doesn't need to start a chapter at a college. Just encourage membership to individuals who want to enter the teaching field.

UNION SPOTLIGHT:
AFT President Randi Weingarten
Champion Activism for Women's Rights
As we celebrate Women's History Month, it's important to recognize the significant contributions of women in the labor movement, including Randi Weingarten, President of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT).
Weingarten has been a tireless advocate for teachers' rights and a vocal supporter of policies that prioritize public education. She has negotiated contracts that include provisions for paid parental leave and affordable childcare, which can have a significant impact on working mothers. Weingarten has also been a champion of women's reproductive rights, and has advocated for policies that support working mothers during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Weingarten's activism is rooted in her own experiences as a teacher and union leader. She has used her platform to amplify the voices of women in the labor movement, and has been a strong advocate for equal pay and opportunities for women in the workplace. Under her leadership, the AFT has been at the forefront of efforts to increase teacher pay and improve working conditions.
Weingarten's work within the labor movement has been instrumental in advancing women's rights in the workplace. As we celebrate Women's History Month, let's honor her legacy and continue to fight for a more just and equitable society for all workers.
Supported the Paycheck Fairness Act: Weingarten has been a vocal supporter of the Paycheck Fairness Act, which aims to close the gender pay gap and ensure that women are paid fairly for their work. She has used her platform to advocate for this important legislation and to raise awareness about the issue of pay equity.
Randi Weingarten
Negotiated contracts with provisions for paid parental leave and affordable childcare: Under Weingarten's leadership, the AFT has negotiated contracts that
include provisions for paid parental leave and affordable
childcare, which can have a significant impact on
working mothers.
